The gymnosperms are a group of seed-producing plants that includes conifers, cycads, ginkgo, and gnetales. The term gymnosperm comes from the Greek  "gymno spermos", literally translating to "naked seeds". In contrast to angiosperms (flowering plants) which have a ovules (eggs) enclosed in an ovary, gymnosperm seeds develop on the surface of  leaves, usually in modified to form cones (with the exception of Ginkgo), or at the end of short stalks as in Ginkgo. The gymnosperms and angiosperms together compose Spermatophyta (seed plants). Most living gymnosperms are conifers (i.e. pines, cypresses, spruces, firs and their relative), followed by cycads, gnetophytes, and the ginkgo.
